Coworker Tricked Him Out of 50 Cents. So He Hid Her Prized Notebook and Sabotaged Her Day.

Most of us were taught that your word is your bond. When you agree to split a lunch bill or chip in for a colleague’s gift, you follow through. It’s a simple matter of respect and integrity, the bedrock of how we treat one another in a civilized society.

But what happens when that basic rule of decency is broken over something as trivial as fifty cents? A young man recently shared a workplace drama that started with a cheap coworker and ended in a very questionable act of revenge, leaving thousands online to debate who was truly in the wrong.

The Incident

The story begins with a 23-year-old man starting his first serious job. A friend who had previously worked with his new colleague, a woman named Tasha, gave him a friendly warning: be alert, because “she can be very manipulative.”

Despite the warning, things seemed fine until a New Year’s gathering at the office. Colleagues were bringing in festive foods to share, and Tasha suggested she and the young man collaborate on buying a bag of sweet bread from a nearby bakery. The cost was a mere dollar, meaning they would each owe fifty cents. It seemed like a simple, friendly plan.

Tasha asked him to go to the bakery alone so the office wouldn’t be left unattended. He agreed but asked her to send her half of the money first. This is where the manipulation began. She insisted it was “better that I go first to see the prices so she could send the whole amount in only one try.” He hesitated but gave her the benefit of the doubt.

Once at the bakery, he confirmed the price was exactly what they expected and texted her. No reply. He called. No answer. It was then he realized he’d been had. As he put it, “I give up and accepted she fooled me.”

He bought the bread anyway to contribute to the party. Back at the office, he reminded her about the money, but she brushed him off with a flimsy excuse that the banking page on her phone was “spoiled.”

Furious at being so brazenly tricked over such a tiny amount, he “decided to take action.” He noticed her “really pretty notebook” that she often left around, took it, and hid it.

The next morning, Tasha was in a panic, desperately searching for her notebook. Because of the frantic search, she was late leaving for her second job. His prank had real consequences, and he felt compelled to ask the internet if he had gone too far.

The Internet Reacts

When he asked for a verdict, people had plenty to say. The responses were swift and fell into a few distinct camps, each with a strong opinion on the matter.

The overwhelming majority felt his reaction was a step too far, especially given the tiny amount of money involved. This “Absolutely Not” crowd thought his retaliation was wildly out of proportion to the original offense. One commenter put it bluntly: “You did this for $1?”

Another felt the prank was deeply immature, saying it had a “Mean Girl vibe.” The consensus here was clear: his behavior was childish and unprofessional.

Then there were the “Devil’s Advocates,” who tried to find a charitable explanation for the coworker’s behavior. Perhaps she was struggling financially? One person suggested, “It sounds like she is hard pressed on money right now.”

But the young man quickly shut that down, explaining that they had just been paid and that she had recently contributed to other office expenses without issue. This detail, for many, turned her from someone possibly struggling into a petty manipulator.

Finally, a third group believed that while his prank was out of line, the coworker wasn’t blameless either. This “Everybody’s Wrong” crowd argued that both parties had behaved badly. One person stated plainly, “Tasha is also an AH. She should have been honest.”

Another wisely pointed out that “Doing something mean to someone just because they did something mean to you isn’t okay.” This camp saw two people acting poorly, even if one started it.

The Etiquette Verdict

Honestly, Tasha’s behavior was bafflingly cheap and dishonest. To go through such an elaborate ruse to avoid paying fifty cents is the kind of thing that rightfully destroys any trust between coworkers. It shows a real lack of character.

However, the young man’s response was a classic case of stooping to her level, and then some. Hiding someone’s personal property is not just a prank; it’s a serious violation of workplace trust that could have gotten him in real trouble.

The proper, adult response is to learn your lesson: Tasha cannot be trusted. You simply file that information away and never engage in any financial agreements with her again, big or small. Taking the high road is always the best path forward.

Your Thoughts

It’s a messy situation all around, and it’s easy to see why people are so divided. Was the coworker’s cheap trick the bigger offense, or did the man’s childish prank cross a more serious line?
