? Key ingredients

Nine ingredients of fajita seasoning in small glass bowls.

Dried spices – The delicious blend of dried spices gives this homemade fajita seasoning its signature taste! You will need a variety of dried spices, including hot chili powder (you can also use chili flakes), sweet smoked paprika powder, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, oregano, and cayenne pepper.

Brown sugar – The brown sugar helps to eliminate some of the acidity in the flavor while giving the seasoning a hint of sweetness.

Salt – This recipe requires a combination of regular and black salt, which gives the fajita seasoning a savory, umami flavor.

? You can find detailed measurements for all ingredients in the printable version of the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

? Expert tip

For the best flavor and aroma, always make sure that you are using fresh spices. Spices that are outdated or dried out will have a different taste and affect the quality of your fajita seasoning.

? Variations

With cocoa – Add a bit of cocoa powder to the spice mix to enhance and add some richness to the flavor.

More or less spice – You can cut back on the chili and cayenne pepper if spice is not your thing, or add more if you like a little more heat. You can also use grounded Guajillo peppers for a mild, sweet heat or Chiles de Arbol for an additional kick of heat.

With alternative spices – For a slightly different flavor profile, you can replace the chili powder or cayenne pepper with chipotle powder. You can also swap out the dried oregano for dried parsley or add coriander powder to the blend.

As a taco seasoning – You can also increase the chili powder, paprika, and oregano to turn this delicious fajita seasoning into a taco seasoning.

? Serving ideas

One of the great things about this homemade fajita mix is that it goes well with so many dishes, not just fajitas! Of course, you can use it to season my portobello mushroom fajitas, fajita veggies (pictured below) shredded oyster mushroom fajitas, and black bean fajitas

However, you can also use it as a topping to flavor my fajitas bowl, copycat Chipotle veggie burrito, or copycat Chipotle burrito bowl. It is also a way to season your taco salads and dishes, such as my Chipotle sofritas and Chipotle plant-based chorizo, or burgers like my copycat Chipotle black bean burger!

Sprinkle a squeeze of lime juice on top, or blend it with your favorite marinades to give your dishes even more tangy flavor. Try it with my fajita seasoning recipe!
