Our Final French Dinner Became a Two-Hour Nightmare. They Refused Us Water and Snatched Our Plates Away.

We all know that when you travel, a little patience goes a long way. Different cultures have different customs, especially when it comes to dining. A leisurely meal is often part of the charm.

However, one Canadian man recently shared a story online about a dinner in the French Riviera that went far beyond leisurely and straight into the territory of just plain rude. His romantic last-night-of-vacation meal turned into a two-hour test of patience that ended with the couple being unceremoniously kicked out.

The Incident

The man and his fiancée were excited for one last French meal. They found a promising, busy restaurant and were told upfront there would be a wait for food, “about 30 minutes, up to an hour maximum.” Fair enough, they thought, and settled in.

But that one-hour maximum came and went with barely a crumb to show for it. Their attempts to get attention were met with strange responses; a polite wave to a server was met with a wave back before he walked away. A request for water was denied because they were “not being served yet.”

After 30 minutes, they finally ordered. But as the clock ticked on, they watched in disbelief as two other tables, who arrived after them, received their drinks, appetizers, and main courses. One table had even finished their entire meal and left before this couple’s entrées arrived.

An hour and 45 minutes in, when the woman bluntly asked, “where’s our food?”, the server-turned-manager was dismissive, reminding them they were warned about the wait. She then added defensively, “she isn’t in the kitchen, and how is she to know.”

When their main courses finally appeared at the two-hour mark, the couple’s patience had run out. They asked to speak with the manager to discuss the abysmal service. Things escalated quickly. A man came from the back, snatched their plates away, and told them to “get out and never come back.”

As they left, he hurled one final insult, calling them “English-speakers” and making a rude gesture. It was a shocking end to what should have been a lovely evening.

The Internet Reacts

When the man shared his story, the internet was deeply divided, with opinions falling into two distinct camps. It seems everyone has a strong feeling about tourist etiquette versus restaurant service.

First, there was the “Absolutely Not” crowd, who were furious on the couple’s behalf. Many felt that no matter the cultural context, the service was simply dreadful. A French commenter chimed in with support, saying, “At the very least, they should have been apologetic and offered you desserts or something.”

Another person put it perfectly: “You did not cause a scene– their decisions and behavior did.” This group agreed that while a slower pace is expected in Europe, watching others who arrived later get served first is infuriating anywhere in the world.

Then there was the “Devil’s Advocate” camp, who felt the couple was missing the cultural cues. They argued that dining in Europe is a much slower affair and that the couple’s North American expectations were the real problem. One person noted, “In Europe there’s not such a huge focus on [fast turnover] and there’s definitely a much slower pace to things.”

Another commenter took issue with the fiancée mentioning she was a server, saying her “at MY restaurant” comment would have earned a “big ol eye roll from me. Glad the owner had the balls to toss them.” This group suggested the couple may have been perceived as rude for waving, sharing a starter, or complaining about portion sizes, thus bringing the bad service upon themselves.

The Etiquette Verdict

Let’s be clear. A relaxed dining pace is one thing; being ignored and disrespected is another entirely. While it’s always wise for travelers to adapt to local customs, the behavior of this restaurant’s staff was inexcusable.

A two-hour wait for a main course, especially while other patrons are served ahead of you, is not a cultural norm—it is poor service. The final, aggressive display of kicking them out and insulting them is beyond the pale. The golden rule of hospitality is to make guests feel welcome. This restaurant did the exact opposite.

Your Thoughts

What do you think of this holiday dinner disaster? Was this a simple cultural misunderstanding that the tourists should have accepted, or was the restaurant staff completely out of line?
