My Coworker Scrolled On Her Phone While We Covered Her Tables, Then Demanded A Promotion

We all know that a good work ethic is one of the cornerstones of a civil society. You show up on time, you do your fair share of the work, and you certainly don’t badmouth the person who signs your paycheck, especially when others can hear you. It’s just common courtesy.

However, one young man recently took to the internet to share a workplace drama that proves not everyone got that particular memo. His story about a coworker’s entitlement has everyone talking about what happens when enough is finally enough.

The Incident

The storyteller works as a waiter in his uncle’s restaurant, a job that requires teamwork and a fast pace. Unfortunately, one of his fellow waitresses, whom he calls “Anna,” seemed to believe the rules didn’t apply to her. He described her as a “complete snob” who was always late and put in hardly any effort.

The rest of the staff, he said, were constantly picking up her slack, doing about 50% of her work while she scrolled on her phone. Can you imagine the frustration?

Despite this, Anna had a shockingly high opinion of herself. She actually asked her boss—the storyteller’s uncle—for a promotion, which he immediately rejected. This is where things went from frustrating to downright unbelievable. During their lunch break, Anna launched into a tirade, insisting she deserved the promotion and claiming the restaurant “would be bankrupt without her.” She then began insulting her boss with a string of demeaning names.

Having heard his uncle insulted and having carried her workload for so long, the young man finally snapped. He confronted her directly. “Are you serious?” he said. “My uncle’s the ‘[foul] one’ when all you do is look at your phone while we take the orders of the tables that were YOUR RESPONSIBILITY? How about you take your head out of your [behind] and learn to do your job.”

Predictably, Anna didn’t take the criticism well and fled the restaurant in tears, leaving her coworkers divided over whether he had gone too far.

The Internet Reacts

When the waiter shared his story online, people had plenty to say, and they quickly fell into a few different camps.

First, there was the “She Deserved It” crowd, who gave the young man a virtual round of applause. They felt that Anna’s behavior was so out of line that a blunt response was not only justified but necessary. One commenter put it perfectly: “It was harsh but it sounds like it was accurate and that maybe she needed a blunt dose of reality.” Another added that family loyalty played a key role, saying, “Don’t come after family, and think you won’t get told where to get off!!”

Then came the “Not Your Place” group. These folks agreed that Anna was in the wrong, but they felt it wasn’t her coworker’s responsibility to discipline her. They argued that the outburst was unprofessional, no matter how deserved. “A reality check is warranted here, but unless you are her supervisor it should not have been you to give it out,” one person wrote. Another agreed, stating, “The fact is that it’s not your place to police her behavior or to give her a reality check.”

Finally, a significant number of people formed the “Blame the Boss” camp. They pointed the finger directly at the restaurant owner for letting the situation fester for so long. They argued that by not managing his lazy employee, he created a toxic environment where this kind of confrontation was inevitable. As one user wisely noted, “honestly your uncle is the worst one. He should not be keeping her around when everyone else has to pick up her slack, it just breeds resentment.” Another echoed this, saying, “The real problem is your uncle needed to address this earlier.”

The Etiquette Verdict

Let’s be honest, in a perfect world, disagreements at work would be handled calmly and professionally through the proper channels. An employee should never have to confront a coworker in such a direct and harsh manner. However, this was far from a perfect situation.

While the young man’s words were sharp, they were also true. The ultimate breach of etiquette came from the coworker who consistently disrespected her colleagues, her job, and her boss. She created the toxic environment, and sometimes, a dose of harsh reality is the only medicine that works.

Your Thoughts

What do you think about this workplace showdown? Was the waiter right to stand up for his uncle and his coworkers, or should he have kept his thoughts to himself and let the manager handle it?
