My Vegan Roommate Demanded I Stop Using My Slow Cooker Because My Chicken Smelled Like “Dead Animals”

We all know that living with others, especially during our student years, is an exercise in patience and compromise. It’s about respecting different habits, schedules, and lifestyles to maintain a peaceful home. It’s a give-and-take, a lesson in tolerance that serves us well for the rest of our lives.

However, one young woman recently took to the internet to share a story that proves not everyone understands that compromise is a two-way street. Her roommate’s shocking demand has left thousands of people wondering where the line between accommodation and entitlement is drawn.

The Incident

A 20-year-old student shared that she lives in a house with five other people, four of whom are meat-eaters and two of whom are vegans. From the start, the meat-eaters tried to be considerate, even designating one of the two fridges for the vegans’ exclusive use. But this wasn’t enough for one roommate, “Charlie.”

Charlie began expressing a strong dislike for seeing anyone cook meat, claiming it would put them off their own food for days. To keep the peace, the others tried to adjust their cooking schedules. The situation took a turn, however, when the young woman started a new waitressing job on top of her university classes. With her schedule packed from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., she started using a slow cooker to have a healthy meal ready when she got home.

This practical solution was met with fury. Charlie confronted her, complaining that the sight of chicken and beef cooking had made them sick and that the whole kitchen now smelt of “dead animals.” Charlie then demanded that she stop using the slow cooker immediately, as it wasn’t fair to them.

The student felt awful, but also pointed out that Charlie knew they were moving in with meat-eaters and, quite tellingly, had no problem using the student’s personal pans, which were regularly used to cook meat.

The Internet Reacts

The online community was overwhelmingly on the student’s side, and their reactions fell into a few distinct camps.

First, there was the “Absolutely Not” Crowd, who were furious on the student’s behalf. They pointed out the hypocrisy and entitlement of Charlie’s demands. One commenter put it bluntly: “Charlie needs to realise that the world doesn’t revolve around them and their dietary choices.”

Another noted the slippery slope of the requests, saying, “This is a give a mouse a cookie situation. They keep making bigger and bigger demands.” Many agreed that if Charlie’s sensitivities were so severe, they should have found an all-vegan house in the first place.

Then came the more measured voices, the “Devil’s Advocate” camp, who at least tried to see things from Charlie’s perspective. A few people acknowledged that cooking smells can be powerful. “When I cook food or make broth in the slow cooker, the smell permeates the whole house, so I get what Charlie is saying,” one person admitted. However, even these commenters quickly followed up by stating that the student was still perfectly within her rights to cook her own food in her own home.

Finally, the “Petty Revenge” Crowd offered some rather pointed, if humorous, suggestions for how the student should handle the situation. One user cheekily suggested she should “Tell Charlie that their food makes you not want to eat anything.” Another took a more direct approach, writing, “He chose to join a household that he knew contained meat eaters. He is not a prince and his housemates are not his servants… I’d stop trying to accommodate him so hard.”

The Etiquette Verdict

Living in a shared space requires a foundation of mutual respect. The housemates had already gone out of their way to accommodate their vegan roommates with a separate fridge and adjusted schedules. That is the very definition of good manners and consideration. Charlie’s demand that a housemate stop cooking her own food in a convenient and healthy way crosses a major line.

The golden rule of shared living is that you cannot impose your personal lifestyle choices on others. Charlie knowingly and willingly moved into a home with meat-eaters. It is fundamentally unfair and ill-mannered to then demand that the majority bend completely to their will. True respect is allowing others to live as they choose, just as you expect them to do for you.

Your Thoughts

What do you think of this situation? Was the roommate’s request a reasonable attempt to feel comfortable in their home, or was it a completely entitled demand?
