My SIL Demanded I Grill Her Custom Groceries After Shaming My Dad’s Diet. Scheduling the Next BBQ During Her Vacation Was the Ultimate Power Move.

We’ve all been taught a fundamental rule of being a good guest: you show up with a smile, you are gracious for the invitation, and you certainly do not criticize the host or the other attendees. It’s a simple code of conduct that keeps social gatherings pleasant and enjoyable for everyone.

However, one woman recently took to the internet to share a story about a family barbecue that proves not everyone plays by these rules, forcing her to take matters into her own hands.

The Incident

A woman, hoping to enjoy a new home with her husband, decided to host a large backyard barbecue for friends and family. Unfortunately, her sister-in-law, whom she calls “Erin,” managed to sour the entire event. According to the hostess, Erin is a “hardcore vegan” who spent the party lecturing everyone on ethics and health. The behavior went from annoying to downright rude when she targeted the hostess’s father, telling him his “diabetes is from eating animal fat.”

As if that weren’t enough, Erin then left the party, went to a store, and returned with a large amount of vegan food, demanding that her hosts cook it for her. The hostess wrote that her sister-in-law was “absolutely tiresome.” The bad blood didn’t stop there; it turned out Erin had also attacked a cousin for admitting she had to stop being vegan for health reasons, calling her “ignorant.”

Faced with planning the next annual barbecue, the hostess dreaded a repeat performance. To avoid drama, she devised a clever plan. Knowing Erin would be on vacation for a week, she scheduled the party for the Saturday she was away.

The party was a success, but when Erin saw the photos online, she was furious, texting the hostess that she was “evil, heartless, and a bully.” The situation escalated, with Erin demanding her brother divorce his wife, calling her “a malignancy on her family that needs to be cut off.”

The Internet Reacts

After the hostess shared her story, thousands of people weighed in, and the court of public opinion was overwhelmingly on her side. The reactions fell into a few distinct camps.

First, there was the “Absolutely Not” crowd, who were appalled by the sister-in-law’s behavior. They felt the hostess was completely justified. One commenter summed it up perfectly: “This ‘Erin’ isn’t annoying because she’s a vegan, she’s annoying because she’s Erin.”

Another pointed out that Erin’s anger likely stemmed from a missed opportunity for attention, writing, “She’s angry because she missed a prime opportunity to put herself at the centre of the story. This is narcissism.” Many agreed that Erin’s goal wasn’t to enjoy the party but to preach to the other guests.

Then came the “Devil’s Advocate” camp, who tried to understand, though not excuse, what makes someone behave this way. Some suggested that for people like Erin, veganism is less of a diet and more of a deeply held belief system. “I say veganism is closer to a religion than a diet,” one person noted, explaining the passionate, and sometimes preachy, nature of her behavior.

Another person offered an interesting analogy about becoming a “crazy bird person,” explaining how a passion can sometimes lead to anger at others who don’t share the same worldview.

Finally, the “Petty Revenge” crowd had a field day suggesting more mischievous ways to handle the situation. Their ideas were certainly creative, if not exactly polite. “Next get together, I would purchase a squirt gun & spray her everytime she spouted something stupid,” one user joked. Another had a similar idea: “I’d ‘accidentally’ drop a pork rib bone on her as I walk by.” A more organized approach was also suggested: “Next year invite her. But turn her into a drinking game. Or like make a bingo sheet of her common things she does and says.”

The Etiquette Verdict

Let’s be perfectly clear: you are never obligated to host someone who is openly disrespectful to you, your family, and your guests in your own home. While the hostess’s method was sneaky, it was born out of a desire to protect her guests and preserve the peace.

Erin’s behavior was a masterclass in what not to do. A person’s dietary choices are their own, but those choices do not give them a license to insult, lecture, or shame others. The golden rule of hosting is to make your guests feel welcome, and the golden rule of attending is to be a pleasant guest. Erin broke that rule spectacularly.

Your Thoughts

What do you think of this family feud? Was the hostess’s secret plan a clever solution to a difficult problem, or should she have confronted her sister-in-law directly and uninvited her?
