My Cousin Demanded a ‘Meat-Free’ Table at Our Wedding. Now She’s Accusing Me of ‘Discrimination’ for Grouping the Vegans Together.

We all understand that a gracious host strives to ensure their guests feel welcome, particularly during a milestone celebration like a wedding. A considerate host will ask about dietary requirements and make every reasonable effort to meet them. However, there’s a clear distinction between a courteous request and an outrageous demand that inconveniences everyone else involved.

One groom recently turned to the internet to recount a story about a wedding guest whose extreme demands completely disrupted his reception planning, demonstrating that sometimes, no matter what you do, some people simply cannot be satisfied.

The Incident

This recently married man shared that he and his bride were organizing their wedding for 75 guests when they discovered that several members of her family followed a vegan diet. The couple was perfectly happy to accommodate them and found a caterer who offered excellent vegan dishes. The problems began when the bride’s cousin issued a very particular demand: she flat-out refused to sit at any table where other guests would be eating meat.

The groom was completely taken aback. After struggling to devise a seating arrangement that could somehow satisfy this requirement, his frustration boiled over. He eventually told his wife, “if her cousin is going to be so militaristically vegan about this, then we are just going to seat all the vegans at one table.” It appeared to be the only viable solution, even though it meant breaking up some family groupings.

When the wedding day arrived, the plan completely fell apart. The mother-in-law declared it rude, and several other vegan guests were upset about being “singled out.” When the demanding cousin herself voiced her displeasure, the groom had reached his breaking point. He told her directly that the whole arrangement was her doing. Her reaction? She accused him of being “discriminatory.”

The Internet Reacts

The online community erupted with opinions, and commenters rapidly divided themselves into distinct camps regarding who was truly at fault.

First up was the “Absolutely Not” Crowd, who were outraged on behalf of the groom. They believed the cousin’s demand was entirely inappropriate.

One commenter stated, “It was up to the cousin to politely decline to attend the wedding if she might be seated near meat eaters. It is NOT the couple’s responsibility to rearrange everything to accommodate this one person’s demands.” A second person expressed it more directly: “Vegans… are not a protected class. You found a workable solution.”

Next appeared the “Devil’s Advocate” group, who acknowledged that while the cousin was in the wrong, the groom’s approach was also unjust. Their argument was that he effectively penalized other, perfectly reasonable guests because of one individual’s sense of entitlement. “I do think it’s unfair to the other people that were separated from their families,” one user wrote with empathy.

A vegetarian commenter echoed this sentiment, stating, “I would be seriously upset being separated from my wife during an event when I have no issues sitting at a table where meat is being served.”

Lastly, the “Petty Revenge” Crowd offered their own creative ideas for how the groom could have managed the situation. Their suggestions zeroed in entirely on the problematic cousin.

“The correct solution would have been to tell the cousin that you can offer a vegan option, but there will be people eating meat at all of the tables, so they can decide whether to attend or not,” one person proposed. Another had a more theatrical suggestion: “TV table and folding chair in the corner for picky cousin.”

The Etiquette Verdict

Let’s state this unequivocally: the cousin was completely out of line. Although the groom’s solution regrettably impacted other guests, he was forced into an impossible position by an outrageously rude demand. A wedding reception is not your personal dining establishment. You are there as an invited guest to celebrate a union, not to impose your own conditions on the entire event.

The fundamental rule of being a guest is showing grace. If the arrangements at an event don’t align with your personal preferences, the courteous and appropriate response is to politely decline the invitation, not to insist the hosts restructure their special celebration around you.

Your Thoughts

This predicament undeniably placed the newlyweds in a tough spot. What’s your take? Did the groom arrive at a reasonable solution to an unwinnable situation, or did he end up penalizing blameless guests over one person’s terrible behavior?
