The Sushi Bar Had No Non-Seafood Entrees. I Was Shamed for Ordering the Kids’ Curry.

We all learn from a young age that when you are a guest in someone’s home, or invited out, you should be gracious and appreciative of the meal. It is simply good manners to be an easygoing guest. But what happens when being “easygoing” means eating something that will make you physically ill? Does politeness require you to suffer in silence?

One woman recently found herself in this very uncomfortable position. She took to the internet to share a story about a family birthday dinner that went terribly wrong, proving that sometimes, family expectations can cross the line from traditional to truly unreasonable.

The Incident

The trouble began when a 29-year-old woman was invited to her brother-in-law’s birthday party at a sushi restaurant. As she explained, it was a family obligation she simply couldn’t get out of. There was just one, rather significant, problem: she has an intolerance to fish and seafood. As you can imagine, that makes navigating a sushi menu quite the challenge.

Scanning the menu, she saw that the only non-seafood options, like chicken katsu curry, were on the children’s menu. Thinking on her feet, she found what seemed like a perfect solution. She politely ordered the chicken dish and, to be fair, even offered to pay the adult price for it. After a quick explanation to the waiter, the restaurant was happy to accommodate her.

Unfortunately, her family was not so understanding. She received “a lot of weird looks,” especially from her sister-in-law. Later, the sister-in-law confronted her, saying what she did was “a bit selfish and a..holish since I was invited for sushi.” The reason for this harsh judgment?

The sister-in-law had been trying to convince her own children to eat more “adult food,” and seeing their aunt order from the kids’ menu supposedly “ruined it.” To make matters worse, other family members agreed, suggesting she should have just “sucked it up and ate the sushi.”

The Internet Reacts

When the woman shared her story, people online were overwhelmingly on her side, and they did not hold back their opinions on her family’s behavior. The reactions quickly fell into a few distinct camps.

First, there was the “Absolutely Not” Crowd, who were simply floored by the family’s audacity. These commenters were furious that anyone would be expected to knowingly make themselves sick for the sake of appearances. One person summed it up perfectly: “Who in their right mind would eat something that will make them sick for the sake of appearances?”

Another sarcastically translated the sister-in-law’s complaint: “Can’t you just get sick… so I don’t have to explain free will to my children?!”

Then there were those who tried to dismantle the sister-in-law’s flimsy reasoning. This group pointed out that the situation was actually a perfect teaching moment, not a ruined one. A commenter noted how easy it would have been for the mother to say, “Aunty has to eat from that part of the menu because she will get sick… if she eats sushi.” Instead of using it as a lesson in empathy and understanding dietary restrictions, the sister-in-law chose to place blame.

Finally, there was the “Petty Revenge” Crowd, who had some rather imaginative ideas for how the woman should have responded. One user offered a wonderfully detailed script, suggesting the woman should have agreed to eat the sushi on one condition: that she could then go home with the sister-in-law. “I’ll eat the sushi, then come home with you and park myself on your toilet for the night,” the commenter wrote. “That way we can discuss it all night long, since I’m going to be up.”

They added that it would be a “great lesson for the kids” on why you shouldn’t let people badger you into doing something that’s bad for your own well-being.

The Etiquette Verdict

Let’s be perfectly clear: under no circumstances should anyone ever be expected to eat something that will make them ill. To demand this of a guest is not just a breach of etiquette; it is a profound failure of basic kindness and respect. A person’s health and comfort must always come before a restaurant’s theme or another person’s parenting agenda.

The woman in this story handled a difficult situation with grace. She found a quiet, simple solution that allowed her to participate in the family celebration without making a fuss or endangering her health. The rudeness here lies squarely with the family members who shamed her for it.

The Call to Action

This situation has certainly sparked a debate about family obligations and personal boundaries. So, where do you stand?

Was the sister-in-law’s frustration understandable, or were her demands completely out of line?
