My Husband Refuses to Eat Vegetables or Spices, Then He Accused Me of Unfairly Forcing Him to Eat Crap

We all know that marriage is a dance of compromise, a delicate balance of give and take, especially when it comes to the simple, daily things like what’s for dinner. It’s a basic rule of partnership that you meet in the middle.

However, one woman recently took to the internet to share a story that proves some partners expect you to dance entirely to their tune, and it’s a song many of us would find quite bland. She found herself in a baffling situation where her husband’s dinner demands left her wondering if she was being unfair.

The Incident

This story begins with a classic case of opposites attract. The wife described herself as a healthy eater who, before marriage, enjoyed a mostly vegetarian diet. Her husband, on the other hand, had the palate of a fussy toddler. His diet consisted almost exclusively of meat, cheese, and starches, with a profound aversion to nearly all vegetables, fruits, and even seasonings.

For years, she lovingly set aside her own preferences to cater to his, preparing the plain, unseasoned meals he demanded. She even stopped making healthy side dishes for herself because, believe it or not, it “bothered him.”

The turning point came with the arrival of their daughter. The mother realized she couldn’t, in good conscience, raise her child on such a limited and unhealthy diet. She put her foot down, stopped the constant fast food runs, and began cooking the delicious, nutritious meals she once loved for herself and her little girl. Her husband, of course, refused to even try them.

The real trouble began when he started complaining. He told her, “it’s not fair that we have these nice meals and he’s stuck eating crap.” He wanted the “nice healthy meals” she was making, but without any of the ingredients—like vegetables or spices—that made them nice and healthy.

She explained the obvious: “I told him unless he’s willing to let me add spices and vegetables to the meals, I literally CAN’T make him nice healthy meals like ours.” Now, he’s pouting, accusing her of excluding him from the good food. It’s a baffling situation, to say the least.

The Internet Reacts

As you can imagine, the internet had plenty to say about this grown man’s dinner tantrum. People from all corners weighed in, and their opinions fell into a few distinct camps.

First, there was the “Absolutely Not” Crowd, who were simply appalled on the wife’s behalf. They saw the husband’s behavior not as picky eating, but as outright control. One commenter put it bluntly: “So, you’ve got two children, is what I’m hearing.”

Another quipped, “Hopefully your other child (aka your husband) will stop pouting and act like the adult he supposedly is.” The most telling detail came when someone jokingly asked if his chicken nuggets had to be dino-shaped, and the wife replied, “He does prefer the dino ones.” The collective sigh was almost audible.

Then came the “Devil’s Advocate” Camp, who wondered if there might be something more going on. A few people gently suggested he might have a genuine food-related disorder called ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder), which can cause extreme anxiety around trying new foods.

One person noted that he might be “deeply ashamed” of his eating habits. However, even this camp drew a firm line, with another person quickly adding that a potential disorder is “no excuse for telling his wife she can’t eat vegetables in her own house.”

Finally, the “Petty Revenge” Crowd brought a bit of dark humor to the table. They focused on the long-term consequences of such a diet. One user dryly commented, “Well, you probably won’t have to deal with that problem for long because he’s eventually dying from scurvy.”

Another shared a funny exchange with her own husband: “My husband asked me why I watched so much true crime on TV. I said ‘To learn from others’ mistakes.’ For some reason he didn’t find it funny.” It seems many women could relate to the frustration, even if just in jest.

The Etiquette Verdict

Let’s be perfectly clear: marriage requires compromise, not total surrender. For years, this woman sacrificed her own health and enjoyment to cater to her husband’s extremely limited tastes. Now that she is prioritizing her health and, more importantly, her daughter’s, she is being met with pouting instead of support.

A grown adult is responsible for what is on their own plate. To demand that your spouse cook for you while simultaneously vetoing every healthy ingredient is not just unfair; it is the height of disrespect. Good manners dictate that you don’t dictate.

Your Thoughts

What do you think of this situation? Is this man just a picky eater who needs to grow up, or is his behavior a serious form of control?
