I Lost All Interest in a Guy Because He Couldn’t Send Back a Wrong Burger on Our Second Date

Most of us understand that part of adulting involves navigating life’s small inconveniences with a certain amount of poise. If a restaurant mixes up your order, the courteous and appropriate response is to gently and respectfully bring the error to their attention so it can be corrected. It’s a basic, uncomplicated exchange.

Yet, a story recently posted online by a young man illustrates a truly perplexing reaction to this everyday situation. His effort to sidestep a moment of trivial discomfort ultimately cost him a third date and exposed a degree of immaturity that is, quite honestly, astounding.

The Incident

A 22-year-old guy was out on a second date with a woman he was genuinely interested in. Everything was going splendidly at the gastropub she had recommended—conversation came easily, and they were both enjoying themselves. He placed an order for a burger, specifically requesting no lettuce and no tomato.

When the meal showed up, his burger contained both toppings. Rather than simply getting the waitress’s attention, he went down a strange route. He completely ignored his burger and only picked at his fries. When his date took notice, he fed her a lie, saying, “sometimes when I go on dates I get so nervous I don’t want to eat.”

The young woman, evidently sharper than he assumed, eventually spotted the error on his plate. “Didn’t you ask for no lettuce?” she inquired. He lied once more, claiming he hadn’t even noticed. She urged him to speak up, but he maintained it was no big deal and that he’d simply take the burger home.

At last, his date decided to handle it herself and politely let the waitress know about the mistake. The server couldn’t have been nicer about it, apologizing right away and offering to bring him a replacement burger at no charge. But he declined, insisting over and over that it wasn’t an issue.

Naturally, this only made everything more uncomfortable. He then grew defensive, snapping at his date, “why do you care? i’m paying for the meal anyway.” Not surprisingly, the young woman said she was “kinda tired” after the meal and headed home, scrapping whatever plans they had for the rest of the evening.

The Internet Reacts

When the young man turned to the internet to ask whether he was wrong for not “yelling at the waitress,” the feedback came quickly and was overwhelmingly critical. People were far less interested in the burger itself and far more troubled by his puzzling conduct and total absence of fundamental communication abilities.

The “Absolutely Not” Crowd was horrified on the young woman’s behalf. They viewed his actions as an enormous red flag. One commenter nailed it: “She didn’t lose interest because you didn’t ‘yell at the waitress.’ She lost interest because you’re shockingly immature and childish, which is a total turnoff.”

Someone else chimed in that his inability to be truthful about something so trivial was profoundly unappealing, writing, “I would probably also loose interest in someone if they cannot speak up for themselves and make up lame excuses.”

The “It’s Simpler Than You Think” Crowd was baffled by the numerous straightforward solutions he overlooked. They noted that he had turned a tiny issue into a full-blown ordeal. One person laid it out plainly: “Wild to me that you think your options were 1) bring the burger home 2) yell at the waitress. There’s a secret third option 3) manually remove the lettuce and tomato and consume the burger.” And naturally, there was also the fourth option: courteously requesting a replacement.

The “She Dodged a Bullet” Crowd believed the young woman made the smart decision by cutting the evening short. They interpreted his behavior as a glimpse into what dating him long-term would look like—filled with unnecessary drama and a chronic inability to address problems.

As one person posed the question, “can you imagine being in a relationship with someone who’s so conflict avoidant they can’t just tell you the truth?” Another commenter concurred, noting that she rightfully recognized he was “not a stable partner.”

The Etiquette Verdict

Let’s make one thing absolutely clear: the young woman had no desire for this man to yell at the waitress. What she wanted was for him to act like a competent adult. There is a vast difference between being assertive and being aggressive, and understanding that distinction is a fundamental pillar of proper etiquette.

By fabricating stories and making the dinner uncomfortable, he was actually being discourteous to his date. His unwillingness to resolve a straightforward problem, coupled with his defensive demeanor, demonstrated a lack of maturity that is understandably off-putting. A dinner date isn’t solely about the food; it’s a window into how someone conducts themselves in everyday life. In this instance, he flunked the test entirely.

What Do You Think?

Was the young woman justified in ending the date over his behavior, or was she being overly harsh about what amounted to a simple bout of nervousness?
