Boyfriend Handed Our Chestnuts to a Strange Kid at the Mall and Called Me Selfish for Stopping It

Most people learn early on that sharing is a fundamental part of getting along with others. However, like any social guideline, there are layers of complexity and important exceptions, particularly when health and personal safety enter the equation.

What appears to be a generous gesture can occasionally turn into a seriously irresponsible one. A woman recently posted a story online about an encounter at a shopping mall, and it has ignited a widespread conversation about where the boundary falls between being kind and being careless, particularly when kids are part of the picture.

The Incident

A mom was having a casual outing at the mall with her boyfriend and their two small children, aged five and six. The family had settled down together and were munching on a bag of roasted chestnuts when a boy who looked to be around ten years old started lingering near them. The mother acknowledged that his presence was a bit irritating, but she offered him a friendly smile regardless.

The situation shifted when the boy leaned over and murmured something to her six-year-old son, who responded with a nod. The boy then walked straight up to the mother and reached directly into the bag of chestnuts. Reacting purely on instinct, she yanked the bag away and told him clearly, “no, you have to go ask your parents.”

Her boyfriend, though, was completely embarrassed. He accused her of being rude and, in an effort to defuse the situation, handed a chestnut to the boy himself. The mother was frustrated, explaining to her boyfriend that you just don’t give food to a child you don’t know. Her concern was validated almost immediately when the boy came back and, without saying a word, “snatches two chestnuts from the bag that my boyfriend was now holding.”

Having had enough, the woman got up and said, “sorry but you can’t take our stuff like that, go to your parents.” The boy placed the nuts back and hurried away. While she believed she was imparting an important lesson about manners and stranger awareness, her boyfriend maintained that she was simply being “selfish.”

The Internet Reacts

People online jumped in with their opinions almost immediately, and the consensus was overwhelmingly on the mother’s side. The discussion naturally split into a few clear groups, all of which found fault with the boyfriend’s behavior.

The biggest and most vocal group was the “Absolutely Not” Crowd, who were shocked by the boyfriend’s complete lack of awareness. Their main worry centered on allergies. One commenter said it plainly: “Your boyfriend could have killed the kid. How does your boyfriend know the kid is not allergic to nuts?”

One person recounted a frightening personal experience, writing, “We found out my son was anaphylactic to nuts after some long distant relative we’d never met before decided a 4 year old needed a handful of nuts.” On top of allergy concerns, people also raised issues of basic cleanliness. “Also don’t want a strange kids hands in my food,” someone noted. This was compounded by the fact that the boy, after grabbing the chestnuts, dropped them back into the bag, effectively contaminating the entire snack.

The second group was the “Devil’s Advocate” camp, although they weren’t really defending the child so much as picking apart the boyfriend’s logic. He thought the mother was being “harsh,” but commenters believed he was dangerously clueless. “Your boyfriend lacks a lot of common sense,” one user commented. “He’s so worried about sounding ‘harsh’ than he is about actual safety.”

Someone else perceptively identified his probable motivation: “Your boyfriend wants to be ‘the nice one.’ That’s going to leave you having to be the bad cop every time rules need to be enforced.”

Lastly, there was the “Petty Revenge” Crowd, who zeroed in on what they would have done in the same situation. Their ideas weren’t really about getting even but rather about maintaining firm boundaries.

When the boy dropped the chestnuts he had touched back into the bag, many felt the snack was completely ruined. “I wouldn’t give the kid the nuts. That’s rewarding bad behavior,” one commenter proclaimed. “I would have thrown them into the garbage.” This group believed that both the unfamiliar child and the boyfriend needed a clear lesson in respecting boundaries.

The Etiquette Verdict

Let’s make one thing absolutely clear: this mother was entirely in the right. In the modern world, generosity should never override common sense and safety. Offering food to a child you don’t know without their parent’s consent isn’t merely bad etiquette; it’s genuinely reckless.

The potential dangers, ranging from life-threatening allergies to medical conditions such as diabetes, are simply too significant to ignore. The boyfriend, in his eagerness to sidestep what he perceived as an awkward moment, completely overlooked the far more serious risk he was introducing. The fundamental principle here is straightforward: when it involves someone else’s children, you must always, always seek their parents’ guidance first.

Your Thoughts

This situation has undoubtedly triggered an essential discussion about contemporary etiquette and child safety. But where do you stand? Was this mother too strict in her reaction, or was her boyfriend dangerously oblivious to the real risks at hand?
