My Mother-In-Law Said A Woman Shouldn’t Eat That Much After I Finished My Steak Platter

We all know a few basic rules of dining etiquette, and perhaps the most important one is to mind your own plate. What someone else chooses to eat, and how much of it, is simply not our business to comment on. It seems like common sense and common courtesy.

However, one woman recently took to the internet to share a story that proves not everyone plays by these simple rules, especially when it comes to family.

The Incident

A 27-year-old woman, who we’ll call Laura, shared her unbelievable story of a family dinner gone wrong. Laura explains that she has a very fast metabolism and works a physically demanding job with horses, so she naturally has a healthy appetite. Her mother-in-law, however, has always made it a point to “police what I eat.”

On the evening in question, the in-laws had invited Laura and her husband, Nate, out for dinner. Having had a busy day and not eaten since morning, Laura was starving. She ordered a large steak platter meant for two people, complete with prawns, bacon, and two sides. She was careful to note that it wasn’t the most expensive item on the menu and that the family had already agreed to split the bill equally.

Her mother-in-law immediately began making comments, saying she “shouldn’t be ordering what I can’t eat.” Laura politely explained she was very hungry and would take any leftovers home. To her mother-in-law’s apparent dismay, Laura easily finished the entire meal. That’s when things took a turn for the worse.

The mother-in-law completely “flipped.” She accused Laura of being “attention seeking and putting on a show.” She claimed her daughter-in-law’s appetite made the men at the table “uneasy” and flat-out stated that “a woman shouldn’t eat that much.”

The final blow? She demanded Laura and Nate cover the entire bill for the whole family. Laura refused, reminding her that her own dishes were more expensive. The evening ended with her being called names and accused of ruining dinner.

The Internet Reacts

When Laura shared her story, thousands of people rushed to weigh in on the dinner disaster, forming a few distinct camps.

First was the “Absolutely Not” Crowd, who were furious on Laura’s behalf. They couldn’t believe the audacity of the mother-in-law. One of the most popular comments was, “I hope you stared your MIL dead straight in the eyes as you took the last bite of your steak.”

Another person was baffled by the outdated thinking, writing, “I am infuriated by the blatant suggestion that OP should not eat her fill because she is a woman and it embarrasses the men!” This group felt the mother-in-law’s behavior was inexcusable, plain and simple.

Next came the “Devil’s Advocate” camp, who tried to understand the mother-in-law’s bizarre behavior. They didn’t excuse her, but they did speculate on her motives. One commenter suggested it was pure jealousy: “This makes me wonder if the MIL is overweight & is on a lot of starvation diets but can’t lose the weight.”

Another person offered a more somber theory, suggesting the older woman was a product of a different time. “I feel bad for the MIL,” one wrote, “she’s so programmed with misogyny… MIL is ready to police other women for the patriarch.”

Finally, there was the “Petty Revenge” Crowd,” who had some creative ideas for how Laura should handle the family’s follow-up attacks. After Laura mentioned her in-laws were sending her articles about “excessive eating,” people had some suggestions. One person advised, “I’d just start sending them articles detailing an over active metabolism in response.” Another suggested a more pointed approach: “I bet she could find some on the psychology of those who police the eating of others. Who hurt you, in-laws?”

The Etiquette Verdict

Let’s be perfectly clear: the mother-in-law’s behavior was a spectacular failure of manners. The entire purpose of etiquette is to make those around you feel comfortable and respected. Commenting on someone’s food choices, portion size, or appetite does the exact opposite—it is intrusive, judgmental, and frankly, just plain rude. To then create a public scene and attempt to punish her financially for not adhering to some bizarre, unwritten rule is beyond the pale. The golden rule of dining is to focus on your own meal and the pleasant company, not to audit the plates of others.

Your Thoughts

What do you think of this situation? Was the mother-in-law just old-fashioned and out of touch, or was her behavior a sign of deep-seated jealousy and control?
