I Ate Two Slices of Pizza While Babysitting. The Parents Accused Me of Stealing ‘Family Food’.

It’s one of the most basic rules of hospitality, isn’t it? When you have someone in your home, especially someone caring for your children during a mealtime, you make sure they are fed. It’s a simple act of kindness and respect that most of us take for granted, a tradition passed down through generations.

However, one young woman recently took to the internet to share a story that proves not everyone follows these unwritten rules of decency. Her experience with a family who begrudged her a couple of slices of pizza has left people absolutely stunned and questioning where common courtesy has gone.

The Incident

The story comes from a 20-year-old woman who babysits to earn a little extra money. One evening, she was watching two boys, aged 7 and 10, when it was time for dinner. The mother had left cash on the table for her to order a large cheese pizza and breadsticks for the children.

Like any babysitter in that situation would, she assumed the meal was for everyone. She served the boys their dinner and had a modest portion for herself: two small slices of pizza and a single breadstick. It was, by all accounts, a perfectly normal evening. The boys were fed and happy, and there were even leftovers in the box.

The trouble started when the parents returned. The young woman, making pleasant conversation, mentioned that the pizza from the local shop was quite good. The mother’s reaction was immediate and baffling. She looked at the sitter, puzzled, and asked, “Why did you eat the kids dinner?”

Stunned, the babysitter explained she only had two pieces. But the parents doubled down. The father chimed in, stating that they “didn’t expect to have to feed me dinner as well” and bluntly told her “not to eat their family’s food.” The poor girl was left feeling, in her own words, “uncomfortable and confused” by the entire exchange.

The Internet Reacts

When she shared her story online, wondering if she had made a terrible mistake, the public response was swift and overwhelming. Thousands of people rushed to her defense, completely appalled by the parents’ shocking lack of grace and gratitude.

The reactions quickly fell into a few distinct camps.

First, there was the “Absolutely Not” Crowd, who were furious on the babysitter’s behalf. They couldn’t believe the nerve of the parents. One person declared the family was “rude and cheap,” while another called their behavior “ridiculous and petty.” The consensus was clear: “It is customary that if you have to feed the children you’re watching… you also get to eat.”

Many shared their own experiences, saying they always offer sitters food, drinks, and snacks. As one commenter pointed out, the parents were also setting a terrible example for their sons: “Remember, kids, the hired help doesn’t get to eat with you.” How dreadful.

Interestingly, there was no real “Devil’s Advocate” to be found. The parents’ actions were so far outside the bounds of normal behavior that almost no one tried to defend them. The only person who seemed to be questioning the sitter’s actions was the polite young woman herself, who worried she had “assumed, perhaps wrongly.” This just made everyone more sympathetic to her plight.

Finally, there was the “Petty Revenge” Crowd, who offered some rather pointed advice. The most common suggestion was simple: “Cross them off your list” and never babysit for them again. People warned that parents this unreasonable over two slices of pizza would likely cause bigger problems down the road.

Some offered more creative solutions, with one user cheekily suggesting that next time, she should bring her own dinner and “heat a really stinky fish in their microwave.” While we can’t endorse that, you can certainly understand the sentiment!

The Etiquette Verdict

Let’s be perfectly clear: the parents were completely and utterly in the wrong. To have someone in your home, caring for your children, and expect them to sit and watch the kids eat while they go hungry is simply inexcusable. It shows a profound lack of respect and basic human decency.

A babysitter is not just “the help”; she is a trusted caregiver you are entrusting with the safety and well-being of your children. The Golden Rule of hosting anyone, especially someone providing a service in your home, is to treat them with kindness and consideration. Offering them a meal is the bare minimum. To scold someone over two slices of pizza is not frugal, it’s just plain rude.

What Do You Think?

This story certainly makes you think about how much manners have changed. What do you think? Were the parents just being careful with their money, or was their behavior a major breach of etiquette?
