? Key ingredients

Ingredients of fajita sauce in small bowls, fajita spice mix, lime juice, oil, water, and soy sauce

Fajita seasoning – The blend of spices from my homemade fajita seasoning is the base of this recipe. This delicious spice blend uses a variety of dried herbs and spices, including chili powder or chili flakes, sweet smoked paprika powder, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, oregano, salt, black salt, cayenne pepper, and brown sugar.

Lime juice – The lime juice adds a splash of zest to the sauce. For the best flavor, use freshly squeezed lime juice.

Soy sauce – The soy sauce gives some umami flavor to the sauce and helps balance out the lime juice’s acidity. For a gluten-free option, you can use tahini sauce.

Vegetable oil – The oil helps to give the sauce a rich flavor and texture. You can also use other neutral oils that do not change the flavor, such as olive or avocado oil.

Water – Water helps to thin the consistency of the sauce without changing its flavor. You can also use vegetable stock to add a bit of savory flavor!

Mix of liquid ingredients and a red spice mix in a small white bowl.

? Expert tip

When using fajita sauce as a marinade, allow at least half an hour for the flavors to soak in. For the best flavor, let it marinate for at least 6-8 hours but no longer than 24 hours. Always marinate foods in the fridge and let it sit at room temperature for 20-30 minutes before cooking.

? Variations

You can customize your fajita sauce with other citrus flavors and flavor enhancers. Try it with orange or pineapple juice versus lime juice, or add brown sugar or honey to give your sauce a hint of sweetness. You can also swap out the soy sauce for adobo sauce (without the peppers) for a smoky, spicy flavor profile, or add a bit of hot sauce if you like it more spicy.

? FAQs

How to thicken fajita sauce?

If your fajita sauce is too thin, combine equal parts of cornstarch or arrowroot with water to create a slurry, and then add it to the sauce. Then reheat it in a small saucepan to activate the starch and make it thicker.

How long should I marinate tofu in fajita sauce?

You should aim to marinate tofu for at least two hours. For maximum flavor, you can marinate it for up to two days. Check out my 13 flavorful tofu marinade recipes for more ways to marinate your tofu!

How long should I marinate mushrooms in fajita sauce?

Because mushrooms are very porous and retain lots of moisture, they only require 10 minutes or less to soak up the flavor. I do not recommend marinating them for more than 30 minutes. Otherwise, they will be too juicy.
