Women Drank Pitchers of Drinks and Harassed My Coworker. I Dropped Their Check Mid-Meal After My Manager Refused to Help.

We all know that basic decency dictates we treat service staff with kindness and respect. A simple please and thank you goes a long way, and it’s a rule most of us learned as children. Going out to eat should be a pleasant experience for everyone, but that requires patrons to behave with a certain level of decorum. Unfortunately, not everyone seems to have received that memo.

One young server recently shared a story online about a time he felt compelled to stand up for a friend and coworker, even if it meant breaking the rules of customer service. His story proves that sometimes, basic human decency must come before the old adage that “the customer is always right.”

The Incident

The story comes from a 26-year-old man who works as a server in a local diner. He explained that he is good friends with his coworker, Sarah, a 23-year-old server. One Monday night, a group of four middle-aged women came in for dinner. They seemed “a little giggly” and immediately started ordering pitchers of drinks.

While taking their food orders, the women asked him about the “handsome waiter walking around.” Confused, as he was the only male server on duty, he asked for clarification. They pointed to his friend Sarah. The server politely corrected them, saying that Sarah is a woman and not interested in other women. The table seemed disappointed but placed their orders without further issue.

A short while later, the server saw Sarah rushing into the kitchen with tears in her eyes. He found her out back, crying and shaking. Sarah explained that the table of four women had called her over and deliberately made cruel and misgendering comments, calling her “handsome” and “big boy.”

Furious, the server went to his manager, who shockingly told him to just keep serving the women and not to mention their behavior. Left with no support, the server took matters into his own hands. He delivered their food, but for the rest of their meal, he completely ignored them.

No drink refills, no water, nothing. His only other interaction was to drop the check on their table mid-meal. His friend was grateful, but his girlfriend felt he was wrong to disobey his manager.

The Internet Reacts

When the server asked the internet for their opinion, the response was overwhelmingly in his favor, though people were divided on how he handled it and who was most at fault.

The first camp, the “Absolutely Not” crowd, was furious on behalf of both servers. They felt the women’s behavior was inexcusable and that the manager was even worse for allowing it. One commenter put it plainly: “Shame on you’re manager for not standing up for his employee.”

Another agreed, stating, “They should’ve been kicked out immediately. Tolerating that behavior from guests makes for a crummy place to work.” Many pointed out that regardless of the specifics, this was blatant harassment of an employee, which no one should have to endure.

Then there was the “Devil’s Advocate” camp, who tried to understand the girlfriend’s perspective. They didn’t defend the cruel women, but they did suggest the girlfriend’s concern was more practical than malicious.

One person speculated, “Maybe she thinks her boyfriend keeping his job is more important than injustice.” Another added that she might just be a person who is “uncomfortable standing up to/disobeying ‘authority figures’ even when they’re morally dubious.” For this group, her advice was about self-preservation, not condoning bad behavior.

Finally, the “Petty Revenge” crowd felt the server didn’t go far enough. These readers believed the women got off easy and shared what they would have done in his shoes. “I think those women are lucky that a tray of drinks didn’t get ‘spilled’ on them!” one person declared.

Another chimed in with a similar sentiment: “You have better will power then I… I would have at least knocked a glass over on them.” For this group, a little passive aggression was the bare minimum these bullies deserved.

The Etiquette Verdict

Let’s be perfectly clear: there is no version of polite society where bullying is acceptable. The behavior of the four women at that table was not just rude; it was cruel and intended to cause pain. To deliberately harass someone, especially a person who is just trying to do their job, is a profound failure of character. They were guests in that establishment, and they abused that privilege.

Furthermore, the manager’s response was a complete dereliction of his duty to protect his staff. An employee was brought to tears by customer harassment, and his solution was to ignore it. Loyalty and respect are a two-way street. This young man stood up for his friend when his own boss wouldn’t. He provided the bare minimum service required, and frankly, it was more than those women deserved.

Your Thoughts

What do you think about this situation? Did the server do the right thing by defending his friend with poor service, or should he have followed his manager’s orders and treated the horrible table with professional courtesy?
