My FIL Claims He Can ‘See’ if Food Needs Salt. I Pre-Salted His Plate as a Prank and Now He’s Fuming.

Most of us were taught from a young age that when you are a guest in someone’s home, you graciously eat what is served. It’s a simple rule of etiquette, a sign of respect for the host’s time, effort, and generosity. Complimenting the cook is always a lovely touch, but the bare minimum is simply to be polite.

However, one woman recently took to the internet to share a story about her father-in-law that proves not everyone plays by these common-sense rules, leading to a dinner debacle that was equal parts hilarious and infuriating.

The Incident

The woman, a 32-year-old professional chef, explained that she generally has a good relationship with her in-laws. She often cooks for them, taking pride in preparing their favorite, and often complicated, dishes. While her mother-in-law is always grateful, her 66-year-old father-in-law has one habit that drives her to distraction: he adds heaps of salt to his food before even taking a single bite.

As a chef, she found this deeply insulting. She had asked him politely, multiple times, to please just taste the food first. If he still felt it needed more salt after that, he was welcome to it. But he always refused, making the rather baffling claim that he can “SEE whether a meal needs more salt or not.”

Things came to a head recently when he specifically requested his absolute favorite dish, a time-consuming meal she agreed to make. While she was cooking, her husband hatched a plan for what they thought would be a “hilarious prank.” He suggested she pre-salt his father’s plate with the amount he usually adds himself. She did just that. At the table, she announced she had gone to “great lengths to accommodate everyone’s preferences.”

True to form, her father-in-law reached for the salt shaker without a moment’s hesitation. The woman described his face after the first mouthful as “priceless.” When he complained she’d gone overboard with seasoning, his own son started cackling, and his 6-year-old grandchild wisely noted, “maybe he added too much salt.” The jig was up, and while his wife found it funny, the father-in-law was furious. He is now pouting, claiming he can no longer trust her cooking.

The Internet Reacts

When the chef shared her story, the internet erupted in a fierce debate, with people falling into a few distinct camps.

First, there was the “Absolutely Not” crowd, who were completely on the chef’s side. They felt the father-in-law’s behavior was the height of rudeness and that he got exactly what he deserved. One person summed it up perfectly: “He explicitly claimed he could see when a meal needs more salt. You made a meal that didn’t need more salt. He added more anyway. It’s his own damn fault.”

Another chimed in, saying, “The very least you can do when someone gives you the fruit of labour… is not be rude and taste it first.” For this group, the father-in-law didn’t have his meal ruined; he ruined it himself.

Of course, there was also the “Devil’s Advocate” camp, who felt the chef and her husband went too far. These readers argued that a person should be allowed to eat their food however they please without being policed. “You ruined your guest’s dinner because you get overly annoyed that he likes to add salt in a way that you deem inappropriate,” one commenter scolded.

Another suggested she should just “let him enjoy his meals in peace,” pointing out that since he has eaten her cooking many times, he likely knows it isn’t seasoned to his preference and is simply adjusting it accordingly.

Finally, a third group saw the humor in the situation, framing it as a justified, lighthearted lesson. They argued that the intent wasn’t malicious, but rather a playful attempt to prove a point.

As one person noted, “can we also mention that this was supposed to just be a funny prank??? … it doesn’t sound like it was meant to teach some sort of lesson or purposefully hurt him, it was light hearted.” This group felt the father-in-law’s overly sensitive reaction was more telling than the prank itself.

The Etiquette Verdict

While playing with someone’s food is generally a no-go, this situation feels like an exception that proves the rule. The core issue here is not about personal taste; it’s about respect. When someone, especially a professional chef, spends hours preparing a special meal for you, the absolute least you can do is taste it as they intended.

To blindly season it is to send a clear message: “I know better than you, and I don’t trust your judgment.” The father-in-law was given a simple, polite request, and he repeatedly ignored it. He was hoisted by his own petard, as the saying goes.
