My Vegan Teen Threw Away a Week of Family Meals. So I Forced Her to Buy and Cook the Replacement Beef.

One of the cardinal rules of a harmonious home is that you respect the choices of the people you live with, especially when it comes to something as personal as food. We make accommodations, we find compromises, and we certainly do not waste perfectly good meals that someone took the time to prepare.

However, one mother recently took to the internet to share a story that proves not everyone abides by these simple courtesies, even when they are living under the same roof.

The Incident

This story comes from a mother who, by all accounts, has been incredibly supportive of her 16-year-old daughter’s decision to become a vegan. She went out of her way to make separate meals and ensure her daughter always had something to eat, even when the rest of the family was having meat. For a while, things were fine, though the daughter did go through a phase of trying to convert the whole family, which her parents quickly put a stop to.

The real trouble began one weekend after the mother cooked two large pots of chili—one vegan for her daughter and one with beef for the rest of the family—to last them the week. The next day, she discovered both pots were gone. Her daughter had thrown all of it away.

The teenager’s justification was that the smell of the beef chili was simply “too much” when she opened the refrigerator, and claimed she couldn’t eat anything from it without “gagging or puking.” She then had the audacity to demand that her mother throw out all the other vegan food in the fridge and buy her a whole new supply.

As you can imagine, the parents were livid. Wasting that much food was completely unacceptable. As a punishment, the mother decided on a direct lesson: she gave her daughter the recipe for the beef chili and told her she had to buy the ingredients and cook a replacement batch herself. After much yelling and begging, the daughter did it, only to break down in tears afterward, calling her mother “awful and disgusting” for forcing her to handle meat.

The Internet Reacts

When the mother shared her story, the internet had plenty to say, with people quickly forming camps around the issue. It seems this particular brand of teenage rebellion struck a chord with thousands.

The first and largest group was the “Absolutely Not” crowd, who were completely on the mother’s side. They felt the daughter’s behavior was entitled and disrespectful. One commenter summed it up perfectly: “It’s like ‘you break it, you bought it’… she ruined your chili; she is responsible for making it right.”

Another added that the teenager needed to learn that “actions have consequences” and that she couldn’t just throw a fit to get her way.

Then there was the “Devil’s Advocate” camp, which tried to explain the daughter’s extreme reaction. Many pointed out that new converts to any lifestyle, be it veganism or a religion, can sometimes be the most zealous. As one person put it, “I think some people in the early stages of veganism go a little hard on it not realising that they’re somewhat losing the grip on the reality of things.”

Even a self-proclaimed vegan chimed in to say that while they agree with the lifestyle choice, the daughter’s approach of forcing it on others and wasting food was completely wrong.

Finally, there was a group that focused on the logic of the situation, particularly the wastefulness of it all. The mother herself explained her reasoning for the punishment, noting that “throwing food away doesn’t somehow magically bring that cow back to life.” This sentiment was echoed by others who pointed out the deep irony of the daughter’s actions.

One user made a powerful point: “The animals used to create these items are dead. There is no bringing them back… In effect her actions mean, they died for nothing.” By throwing the food away, she wasn’t honoring an animal; she was disrespecting the sacrifice entirely.

The Etiquette Verdict

Let’s be perfectly clear: your personal dietary choices end where another person’s plate begins. While this young woman is entitled to her beliefs about veganism, she is not entitled to enforce them on her family, and she is certainly not entitled to destroy their food. The core issue here is not about being vegan; it is about a staggering lack of respect for her parents, their money, and the time and effort that went into preparing those meals.

The golden rule of any shared living space is that accommodation is a two-way street. This mother went above and beyond to support her daughter’s lifestyle. The daughter repaid that kindness with wastefulness and entitlement. The punishment, while harsh, was a direct consequence of her actions and taught a valuable, if difficult, lesson about respect and responsibility.

Your Thoughts

This situation has clearly divided people, even within the family itself. So, what do you think? Was the mother’s punishment a fitting lesson for her daughter’s disrespectful behavior, or did she take it a step too far?
