My Mother-in-Law Tried to Physically Force Me to Cook a Second Dinner While I Was Breastfeeding My Newborn

Most people understand that being a guest in someone else’s home means graciously accepting what’s served. It’s one of the most fundamental principles of hospitality. You don’t trash-talk the cooking, and you absolutely wouldn’t have the audacity to insist that the host—particularly a brand-new mother—whip up a completely separate dish just for you.

Yet one young woman recently went online to recount an experience that demonstrates some people have zero regard for these basic social norms. What started as an ordinary dinner with her in-laws spiraled into an appalling act of disrespect that left her feeling bullied and utterly drained.

The Incident

A 25-year-old first-time mom, whom we’ll refer to as Elena, revealed that things between her and her in-laws have never been smooth. She describes them as having “unrealistic expectations,” convinced she should attend to her husband’s every whim. Whenever her husband pitches in with household tasks, they blame her for neglecting her “wife duties.”

Everything came to a head the night they visited for dinner. Elena, who genuinely loves to cook, prepared a meal but kept the seasoning mild because her husband doesn’t like a lot of salt. Her thinking was straightforward—guests could easily season their own plates to preference. Once the food was served, she settled in to breastfeed her newborn.

That’s when her mother-in-law approached her. “Excuse me, what are you doing?” she demanded, then complained that her husband considered the food “un-edible” because it lacked enough salt. Elena politely pointed them toward the salt shaker, but her mother-in-law wouldn’t hear of it, insisting she “make him another batch.”

When Elena held firm, explaining that her infant needed to nurse, her mother-in-law flew into a rage. She attempted to “forcefully pull me up, while I’m holding the baby,” demanding she return to the kitchen and cook again. Pushed past her breaking point, Elena grabbed their plates, threw the food in the garbage, and told them they could either go without eating or get out. Predictably, a flood of furious text messages followed.

The Internet Reacts

The online community rallied behind the young mother almost unanimously, but the discussion rapidly zeroed in on one conspicuous absence from her account: her husband.

The first group was purely outraged for Elena, horrified by her in-laws’ conduct. The physical dimension of the encounter particularly alarmed people. One commenter wrote, “Warning bells are going off in my head because your MIL physically picked you up trying to get you to obey her.”

Someone else sharply observed, “Your husband had no problem with MIL laying hands on you. No less while holding the baby.” The brazen nerve of insisting on an entirely new meal was not lost on anyone either.

But a second and considerably larger group argued this wasn’t really an in-law issue at all—it was a husband issue. When someone asked what her husband had done during the whole ordeal, Elena responded, “He’s there he doesn’t pick sides. He’ll try to say to not argue or change the subject.” That revelation set off a wave of harsh criticism directed squarely at him. “Not picking a side is still PICKING a side,” one person declared.

“His silence means he’s accepting of his parents’ behavior.” Another commenter laid it out simply: “He picked a side when he married you.” The overwhelming agreement was unmistakable: his inaction was giving his parents a green light to disrespect her.

This gave rise to a third faction: the “Take Action” crowd. These commenters offered direct, no-nonsense guidance for handling both the in-laws and the spineless husband. Their recommendations ranged from sensible to drastic. “Block them from your phone and set your boundaries hard,” one person urged.

Some went further, recommending she change the locks and simply not open the door for surprise visits. As for the husband, the counsel was equally unsparing: “Give him some options: A) He grows a spine and stands up for you against his bullying mother. B) Marriage counseling. C) Divorce lawyer.”

The Etiquette Verdict

Allow us to state this unequivocally: no guest should ever, under any circumstances, demand that their host cook an entirely new meal to accommodate their taste buds. The correct way to handle food you don’t enjoy is to quietly nibble a modest serving and express gratitude for the effort. To barge in on a new mother while she’s nursing her baby with such a demand goes beyond rudeness; it’s downright heartless.

On top of that, physically grabbing your host to coerce her into obeying is not merely a lapse in manners—it is aggressive behavior that is entirely inexcusable. This young woman is not a personal chef at anyone’s beck and call. She is a wife, a new mother, and the hostess of her own household, and she is entitled to be treated with dignity, compassion, and encouragement. Her husband’s foremost obligation is to her and their newborn child, and that means shielding them from mistreatment, even when the offenders are his own parents.

Your Thoughts

Was this new mother wrong for tossing the food in the trash, or were her in-laws entirely out of bounds?
