Host Accused Me of ‘Starving Myself’ at Dinner Party After Criticizing My Small Portions

There are a few unspoken rules we all learn growing up. Don’t talk with your mouth full, say ‘please’ and ‘thank you,’ and, for goodness’ sake, never comment on a person’s weight. It’s a topic fraught with emotion and personal history, and it’s simply no one else’s business.

However, one woman recently took to the internet to share a story that proves not everyone got that particular memo, leading to a dinner party disaster that had everyone talking.

The Incident

The woman explained that she and her close-knit group of girlfriends had been weathering the pandemic with video chats. They kindly agreed to include a friend’s cousin, Abby, who was feeling lonely. To finally meet in person, the group decided to have a small dinner at Abby’s home.

What should have been a lovely evening quickly went sour. The storyteller had been quietly struggling with depression, which had caused a significant, unintentional weight loss. Abby, who hadn’t seen her in a while, immediately pounced on the subject.

At first, it was gushing praise, but when dinner was served, the mood shifted dramatically. Seeing the woman take a smaller portion due to her lack of appetite, Abby launched a shocking public critique. She accused her guest of “starving myself” and having “unhealthy body standards.”

As the other friends exchanged uncomfortable glances, Abby doubled down, declaring her guest a “really sick person.” The final blow came when Abby announced that “any weight loss that comes from starving yourself isn’t something to be proud of.” Humiliated, the woman excused herself and went home, with her loyal friends following suit.

But the story doesn’t end there. When Abby was later told the real reason for the weight loss, she didn’t apologize. Instead, she became furious, accusing the women of making a fool of her and claiming the storyteller had intentionally “set her dinner party up to fail.” It was a masterclass in turning oneself into the victim, and it left the poor woman wondering if she was somehow at fault.

The Internet Reacts

The internet, as you can imagine, had plenty to say, and the vast majority of people were firmly in the woman’s corner. This “Absolutely Not” crowd was appalled by Abby’s lack of manners and basic decency. One commenter hit the nail on the head, speculating, “Maybe this sort of toxic behavior is why Abby needed to use her cousin to make friends?”

Another pointed out a crucial rule for sharing personal information: “Somebody who comments THAT much on your body and then starts attacking your body is not a safe person. You don’t disclose sensitive personal information to an unsafe person.” The consensus was clear: Abby was completely out of line from start to finish.

Of course, in any situation like this, some try to understand the other side. In this case, the most charitable explanation came from the storyteller herself, who wondered if Abby’s rudeness stemmed from social anxiety. “I think part of it was her being nervous,” she mused, guessing that “she thought my weight loss would be the best conversation topic to talk about?”

While a kind thought, it hardly excuses the relentless and cruel nature of the comments. It’s a generous attempt to find reason in unreasonable behavior, but most agreed it didn’t let Abby off the hook for her actions.

Many people focused on what proper etiquette would have dictated in this situation. Even if Abby’s concern had been genuine, her approach was all wrong. As one person wisely noted, a truly concerned friend would have “taken you to one side and privately asked if you were ok.”

Another commenter offered a timeless piece of advice that Abby would do well to remember: “The best way to avoid putting your foot in your mouth is to keep it shut.” The entire painful ordeal could have been avoided with a little discretion and kindness.

The Etiquette Verdict

Let’s be perfectly clear: your health is your business. You are never, ever obligated to disclose personal medical information to an acquaintance, especially not to manage their feelings or prevent them from behaving badly. A person’s body, what they eat, and why they’ve lost or gained weight are not acceptable topics for public discussion or judgment.

Abby’s behavior wasn’t just a minor slip-up; it was a profound breach of trust and decency. The true failure of the dinner party lay not with the guest’s silence, but with the hostess’s shocking lack of grace.

Your Thoughts

What do you think? Did the woman handle this with grace by leaving, or should she have confronted the rude hostess on the spot?
